This
year’s Festival starts on Friday, Oct. 1 with a performance by Ringebu
Choir and Fossekallen folk dancers.
These Norwegian groups, all dressed in their bunads
(Norwegian costumes) will join us for a buffet-style lapskaus (traditional
Norwegian beef and vegetable stew) dinner beginning at 5 p.m. in the Fellowship
Hall. The program starts in the
sanctuary at 7:00 p.m.
All
are welcome to the Lapskaus dinner,
serving between 5 and 6:30 p.m. Requested donation for the dinner and program
together is $15, or $10 for just the program. (Child’s tickets are half-price)

to Leiv Eriksson International Festival 2004
The Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church celebrates
common faith and heritage with the Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian
and
Swedish communities
of the Twin Cities. The festival is named after the Viking
Leiv Eriksson who discovered America one thousand
years ago. Throughout
the month of October, there will be
special worship services, concerts,
open
house
lectures, meals,
field
trips and commissioned
music. A
carved statue of St. Peter, entitled “Peter
Accused” carved by Fred Cogelow is on display.

Oct.
17 Bloomington Symphony Orchestra Plays Nordic Music

On October
17, Bloomington Symphony Orchestra will perform an entire concert of Nordic
music. The guest soloist will be Roger Frisch, violinist and Associate
Concertmaster with the Minnesota Orchestra. He will perform the lyrical Romance
for Violin by
Svendsen and the North American premier of Finnish composer Fabritius’ Violin
Concerto. Grieg’s Norwegian
Dances and Sibelius’
powerful Symphony
#1 will complete the
program. The concert will be at 3:00
p.m. at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, 9201 Normandale Blvd., Bloomington.
Tickets are $12, $10 for seniors and $6 for students. Order

Ron
Nelson, LEIF Composer

Ronald A. Nelson has composed a special piece of music for this year’s
festival. The text is taken from Luke 6.27-31
and the title is in Swedish: Älska ere fiender (Love
Your Enemies).
The Mindekirken Choir will perform the music
during the worship service on Sunday, October 17.
Composer Ronald A. Nelson was
born to Swedish parents in Illinois. He is a graduate of St. Olaf College and
the University of Wisconsin.

30: Tour Finnish Architectural
Treasure Christ Church Lutheran
Hidden
in a south Minneapolis neighborhood is Christ Church Lutheran, designed by
renowned Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen in 1949. The church is included in the
American Institute of Architects’ collection of 31 “buildings that changed
modern life.”
Follow
the guided tour led by a church docent to learn about and appreciate the
simplicity of what Saarinen called the “honest” architect. Seeking to pay
special attention to optimal acoustics, Saarinen avoided the construction of any
parallel surfaces in the church.

5: Prof. Reidar Dittmann:
Summer Night in Scandinavian Painting
Reidar Dittmann, Professor Emeritus of Art History and Norwegian, St. Olaf
College, gives a slide presentation on “Summer Night in Scandinavian
Painting.” The special light and beauty of nature in the Scandinavian
countries has inspired a lot of painters. Dittmann will show slides and comment
on
several of the greatest Scandinavian paintings.
Dr.
Dittmann is a popular Norwegian speaker, lecturer, author and authority on
Norway and the Norwegian language, Scandinavian and European art, international
studies, the Holocaust, world travel and music, especially Edvard Grieg. A
native Norwegian, he was a resistance fighter in WW II, is a survivor of the
Buchenwald Concentration Camp, founder of the St. Olaf College International
Studies Program and recipient in 1979 of the St. Olav Medal awarded by the King
of Norway

Swedish Museum Gammelgården

Executive
Director of Gammelgården Lynne Bloomstrand Moratzka will
present a program on this fabulous site.
Gammelgården
Museum, located in Scandia Minnesota, is dedicated to
preserving, presenting and promoting the
Swedish Immigrant Heritage in Minnesota. The eleven acre site includes some of
the oldest buildings from the mid 1800’s era of immigration. Of the six
buildings on the site, three are built in the Swedish log style: Gammel Kyrkan
(1856) is the oldest existing Lutheran sanctuary in MN, Prast Hus (1868) is the
oldest parsonage in MN, and Immigrant
Hus (1855).

On Saturday October 16th, you are invited to visit
this location. The tour will begin at 1:00; car-pools will leave
Mindekirken at noon.

Dr.
Bill Halverson: Johan Svendsen: Norway’s Great Symphonist
Johan
Svendsen's opus list numbers just 33 works, but among them are some of the most
stunningly beautiful compositions for orchestra by any Nordic composer,
including the
famous
Romance for Violin
which will be performed by violinist Shirley Santoro. It will also be played during the Bloomington
Symphony Orchestra’s concert on Oct. 17. Svendsen’s music even led Edvard
Grieg to rue the quality of his own compositions. Dr. Halverson
is a graduate of Augsburg College and Princeton
University and
has devoted much of his scholarly work to the study of Norwegian music.

Ralph
Tuttila and Finnish Tango

Tango, a Finnish passion
Tango
in Finland? Dancer and
musician Ralph Tuttila will entertain with perspectives from his tango travels
and explain why this Latin music has taken hold so far north. With musician
Dennis Halme and dance partner Joan Gerr, Tuttila will give a historical
background illustrating various tango musical traditions from Argentina and
demonstrate tango ballroom dance styles.

for the first time. Don’t miss this exotic event.

to Sunday Morning Worship Services
The Sunday morning worship is the heartbeat of the
congregational life at Mindekirken. During the Festival, the 11:00 a.m. services
will feature the spiritual heritage of the different Nordic countries. The
Mindekirken choir, conducted by Music Director Jim Reilly,
sings at the services. Jens
Arne Dale of Norway is the current Pastor. He
preaches in Norwegian. English translation is available from the ushers. Coffee
is served after the service downstairs in the Fellowship Hall.
This
year the Mindekirken Choir will perform a commissioned piece
by Ron Nelson on
Sunday, October 17 at the 11:00 service.
October
3: Danish Hymns and Music
The
service with holy communion will feature Danish music. The hymns will all be
from the Danish tradition. Music Director Jim Reilly will play organ and piano
music by Danish composer J.P.E. Hartmann during the service. The Lessons will be
in Danish. Special greetings will also be presented by the Danish Community.
After the service, Coffee will be served in Fellowship Hall.

10: Icelandic Liturgy and Music
Theologian
Eygló Bjarnadóttir will lead the congregation in the Icelandic liturgy. Pastor
Jens Dale will present the sermon in Norwegian. Special music – both
instrumental and choral - has been obtained directly from Iceland to feature
during the service. Honorary Consul General Örn Arnar will bring greetings from
Iceland. Holy
communion will be celebrated

17: Swedish Service with Swedish Pastor
Worship
will follow the Order of Service from the Swedish church and will be entirely in
Swedish with English translations available. Honorary Consul General Bruce
Karstadt will bring greetings from the Swedish community. Mindekirken’s choir
will premiere the LEIV commissioned choral work by Ron Nelson.
The keyboard music will be by the Swedish Baroque composer Johan Helmich
Roman. Holy communion will be celebrated.

24: Participation from Augsburg College
Kari
Burke Romarheim, Augsburg College graduate and Luther Seminary student will
preach in Norwegian. Augsburg’s Woodwind Ensemble will provide music for the
service. Augsburg College has an active chamber music program that includes
woodwind, brass, string, and vocal chamber ensembles. The Ensemble has performed
at many college functions and at several churches and schools during the past
two seasons. They are coached by Merilee Klemp.

31: Finnish Day
Children
from the Finnish Language School of Minnesota will sing at this service under
the direction of Elima Ruppert, who grew up in Finland. The Finnish Language
School of Minnesota was established in September 2002.
The purpose of the school is to provide a motivating Finnish community for
children and their parents. In addition to learning and maintaining their
Finnish language skills, the children will gain more appreciation for their
heritage.

Church Life in Finland Today
Musical Sunday School, 10:00 a.m.
On the last Sunday of each month, Mindekirken’s offers a musical Sunday school
with Norwegian and English songs.
Family Service, 11:00 a.m.
The service is bilingual in English and Norwegian. Pastor will paint and preach
in English. Harvey Gustafson will play Finnish organ music by Sulo Salonen,
Taneli Kuusisto and Ilmari Krohn.

Oct. 18: Lecture at Augsburg College
“Grieg
and Peer Gynt: The Rest of the Story ” by Dr. William Halverson 11 a.m., Music Hall M-3 (choir

9: Nordmanns-Forbundet Banquet
The fall banquet of the Minneapolis Chapter of Nordmanns-Forbundet will be held
on Saturday, October 9th, at the Sheraton Bloomington Hotel (formerly Radisson
Hotel South). The social hour will begin at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m., with the
program to follow. The price is
