Filmaften; Free Norwegian Movies Shown with English subtitles
Next Filmaften— Friday, 26. februar 2010    7:30 p.m.

Norwegian Ski Legends     Et Ski-eventyr

This 3 hour (6 episodes) TV documentary shows how the sport of skiing developed in Norway and how it spread throughout parts of the world: from the early days of ski pioneer Snowshoe Thompson, in the Lost Sierra Mountains of California and his legendary mail route to the remote mining camps.

The ski story continues with ski-legend Sondre Norheim from Morgedal, the founder of modern skiing.

We meet Carl Howelsen from Asker who won Holmenkollen in 1903 and later became the father of skiing in the State of Colorado. The first Winter Olympics in Charmonix was almost boycotted by the Norwegians but finally ended up winning almost all the medals.

We will show the first 3 episodes.  Norwegian and English language with English subtitles.  FREE

Bring movie snacks to share and watch a Norwegian film with English sub-titles.  It's fun and free!

Hei,

I encourage each one of you to extend your norsk experience beyond your class, by coming to a filmaften and/or joining us for an afternoon of barnefilmer. Please feel free to contact me if you know of someone who should be mailed a brochure. And, don’t forget to watch the webpage for updates and postings.

Velkommen skal du være!

Vennlig hilsen

Krista Schweppe, program administrator

Mindekirken’s background

Mindekirken was organized in 1922 in post-WWI American society. At that time it was not always acceptable to be anything but 100% American. For many, this meant sacrificing their morsmål, or native language. A group of Norwegians recognized the importance of maintaining their language and culture and joined together to establish the Mindekirken community. Today, Mindekirken is the only church in the Twin Cities where Norwegian is used in worship services.

The Language and Culture Program

Our program consists of language and culture classes. The language classes meet for two hours each week over a period of ten weeks. A primary goal of our language program is promoting communication through the development of speaking and listening skills. Explanations in English, together with reading and writing exercises will be used to help support and achieve the primary goal.

Books and Prices

Class materials are not included in course tuition. Materials such as textbooks, workbooks, dictionaries, grammar books, and instructional packets are available for purchase at Mindekirken.

Registration and Payment

We strongly encourage advance registration and reserve the right to limit class size. The cost of tuition is $155 for adult and children’s language classes and $80 for cultural classes. Registration forms and checks can be sent to:
