Prestens Skrivebord - May SPRING IS COMING Today I received a letter from my car company reminding me that spring is the proper time for cleaning my car and preparing it in many ways for a happy summer season. If I ordered the service now the cost would be favorable. I happened to talk to a person at the gas station the other day with a boat on the trailer and he told me that now it is due time to prepare the boat and make it ready for sailing at Lake Minnetonka. As the ice and snow disappeared very fast during early April I realized how the road and park companies are starting to clean up. Our Custodian at Mindekirken is already busy outdoors. Vernon has quite a space to take care of with the parking lot, the sidewalks, the lawns and flowerbeds. It is so good to have someone taking care of this to make it nice around our church. This makes it attractive to come to Mindekirken and creates a good feeling of welcome for church comers. This is not something separated and disconnected from what is going on inside the church. The custodian service is part of the worship service as well and as such belongs to the spiritual realm and is connected to the whole church business. I had a walk along the shore of the Mississippi River and learned about the flood and how threatening it can be to people living close by. But it is impressive to look at one of the biggest rivers in the world taking its course toward the ocean. At sunrise one of these mornings in early April I listened to "Våren" by Grieg. I am never tired of this wonderful piece of music. It takes me back to what spring is like in the western part of Norway. The high mountains, fjords, melting of the snow high up and the big and strong waterfalls creating such a fascinating sight and marvelous music and how the fruit trees in Hardanger are in bloom. If you have seen it you’ll never forget! To play Grieg’s "Våren" is a fresh start of a new day. Do you know the poem of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson "Jeg velger meg April"? If you read Norwegian this is quite a piece. I also like to sing "Våren" by Elias Blix : "No livnar det i lundar, SPRING is a word that conveys a feeling of warmth and growth and the experience of new life coming. The spring season in human life is similar. What young people experience and learn is basic for their adult life. "All vokster god må gro om vår". If young people are instructed to follow the law of the Lord "They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season and their leaves do not wither. In all they do, they prosper" Psalm 1:3 This is for all of us to keep in mind. Happy spring season!
