Fra prestens skrivebord

Hello everyone,

This issue of the Communicator represents a renewal in the history of the newsletter for the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church. So far, the newsletter has been put together by our office secretary Kaia Knutson. Now she has got company, with a small committee. We used to print it ourselves, now the printing is done at Printing Arts. The benefit of professional printing is higher quality of the pictures. We hope you enjoy it. And due to the better quality of the print and the paper, we may also use smaller type. That means we will have room for more text and pictures. Gone is the monthly calendar on page 3. The most important events are now listed on the back page (maybe that’s what you will put on your refrigerator)

The Communicator will present people and events at Mindekirken. Every issue will have a small devotion. There will be a column with short notices from Norway, especially news from Norwegian church life.

We’ll do the layout ourselves, but our expenses will now increase. Due to that, one page will be covered with advertising. (Three months of a business card-size ad is $100). The November issue will have a return envelope for free-will donations from our readers to help cover our expenses.

Hello Klubb 500

Some of you are reading Mindekirken’s monthly newsletter for the first time. Mindekirken has approx. 145 full-member households, and almost the same number of associate members. On our regular Communicator mailing list, we have 1100 names. For this issue, we are using the mailing list from Klubb 500, with 2800 names (including the 1100 regular subscribers). Klubb 500 works on fundraising for Mindekirken. If you have received the Communicator for the first time now, we invite you to subscribe to it. See page 3.

Hello, LEIF

The special focus of this October issue of the Communicator is the 15th Annual Leiv Eriksson International Festival (LEIF) "Songs from Fjords and Forests" is the theme of this year’s festival. On three Sunday afternoons, there will be voice recitals with Norwegian, Icelandic, and Swedish singers. There will be lectures on the Vikings, the Nidaros Cathedral, and on the hymn writer Landstad. We will host a folkdance group and a small old-time orchestra. There will be a special art exhibition at Mindekirken, and some Scandinavian films at different theaters. Every Sunday service in October will be special, for instance when our former interim pastor Torgeir Havgar visits us again.

Look at pages 4 and 5 for more details about the Leiv Eriksson International Festival. We certainly hope you’ll enjoy it.
