Presten's
Spalte - Februar 2007 During the
last weeks, people have noticed improvements of the sound quality at
Mindekirken: both in the Fellowship Hall and especially in the Sanctuary. We
think that we are close to the goal in the Sanctuary now. Have you seen the new
speakers? If not, it is a good sign, as their color is so equal to the
background that you hardly notice them, which also is the point. After the
service, I recently have heard comments like “Today I heard you very well!” When I was a
small boy, I now and then visited my father after school at his office. He had a
hardware and painting store, and he often had to do office work in the
afternoons and the evenings. I noticed when he opened the telephone book,
searching for a customer or business partner, that when he found the number, he
spoke it loudly. Not for me, but for himself. I found it strange that my father
“talked with himself”! But later I understood why he did so: We remember
much better what we hear than what we just read silently! When it
comes to our Christian faith, it is something of the same. Faith
comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of
Christ (Romans 10:17).
Even if the Bible texts and the sermon are offered both in written and oral form
at Mindekirken, it is very important to hear properly in church. Both the spoken
words, and not least the music and singing! We also have to add that when we
listen to God’s word, we need not only good technical quality, but that the
Holy Spirit opens our hearts, so that we really hear the Word, and get nourished
by it. Now
as the technical quality has improved so much in Mindekirken, we have discussed
whether we should offer the Sunday service as a CD copy during the coffee hour.
Perhaps some church-goers are interested to take a copy to someone that could
not attend that Sunday? Or that they for themselves want a copy, perhaps in
order to repeat parts of the liturgy to learn it by heart? Our
Sanctuary has very good natural acoustic conditions. On the contrary, the
Fellowship Hall is more of a challenge. We need to work more on that project.
Thank you to the Tuesday Open House committee, and the LEIF committee, who both
have contributed economically to getting the new sound equipment. We also thank
our trustees, who have done a great job on this project, and Dick Rees, who has
provided and adjusted and readjusted the equipment! Not to forget, thank you to
Bob Worrall, Andrew Worrall and Thea Deach for operating the sound board on
Sunday mornings! To
all of you: Welcome to Mindekirken to hear the Word of God in Norwegian and
English, and to listen to our wonderful music program! I believe that you from
now on will hear well. |
