Syttende Mai 2004 celebrations at Mindekirken.

By Magne A. Hatlevik

Congratulations to the Syttende Mai Minnesota committee! You did it again! The Syttende Mai celebrations were a success. Three days filled with lots of great events to attend. The weather on Syttende Mai was a lot better than the forecast had promised. That same morning I talked with my brother in Fosnavåg, Norway and he told me that they had a very rainy, windy and cold day.

The events at Mindekirken started at 10:30 with a special choir concert followed by the Sunday worship service at 11a.m. The church was filled to the last seat with more than 550 people in attendance. In addition to the Mindekirken choir, we had special music by the Nordkapp Male Chorus, The Norwegian Glee Club of Minneapolis and Mindekirken’s Sunday School Choir.

After the service we had the traditional Folketog parade through the neighborhood by Mindekirken. Following the parade, the celebration continued in the parking lot behind Mindekirken. Many enjoyed the Norwegian custom of lunching on hotdogs, chips, ice cream and lemonade. After lunch, a folkdancing group perform and we had music by the Mindekirken Parade Band. For all of you to enjoy, we will post some new Syttende Mai pictures on the Mindekirken web site www.mindekirken.org. Check it out!

Thank you to all the volunteers that made the Syttende Mai 2004 celebration possible. It was very well done and I hope we can do it again next year. Not even in Norway do they celebrate Syttende Mai for three whole days. To all of you, keep up the good work.
