Presidents message for October 2004...
By Magne A. Hatlevik, Congregational Council President

As I am writing this, it is mid September and all is well. There has been a surge of activity at Mindekirken in the last month. Tuesday Open House is back on a regular schedule. The Norwegian Language and rosemaling classes have started with 21 classes and about 150 students. The L.E.I.F festival is about to start with an outstanding selection of programs. The Fellowship Hall has a fresh coat of paint and the rooms in the new addition basement are almost completed. Many volunteers have been working on these projects. Thank you to all.

As many of you might have heard, there is a new system for Sunday Kirkekaffe. The Kitchen Committee tried it out over the summer with good results and so it is being continued. The tasks are being broken up so that someone can either sign up to do kitchen setup or prepare food or to wash dishes and clean up. This way even if you don’t want to work with the food you can still contribute and people are not stuck working in the kitchen all Sunday.

Another active group is the Grounds Maintenance Committee also called "Utegruppa". They have already spent many hours assessing and determining ways to give Mindekirken real curb appeal. They have started by pulling out all the old plants and bushes at the main entrance to the church. New hardy plants, amended soil and other landscaping features are soon to arrive. Their goal is to be all ‘spruced up’ for Syttende Mai next spring.

Mindekirken depends on the hard work of these and many other committees. Not only does important work get done, it is also an opportunity to meet people and make friends. Talk to me if you are interested in helping at Mindekirken. I’ll be happy to get you in touch with the right people.

I know the City-County Federal Credit Union construction project has tried our patience many times this summer. But the latest good news is that the new parking lot should soon be completed. In addition, the Credit Union has purchased the "Blue House" on Elliot Ave and plan to expand the parking lot onto that property. This will add about 10 – 12 parking spots that can be used by Mindekirken during evenings and weekends. In addition there will be another entrance to the lot from Elliot Ave.
